Question -      How can I become a professional actress
(Submitted Friday, October 06, 2000)
Hi. Please could you give me some advice on where I start to become a professional actress? I recognize that it may take me years of hard work to become one but I know I can do it. What do I do first as I have never acted? Do I join an amateur dramatics club in my area first and practise for a year or so? Do I have to attain a 3 year degree in acting before I can become a professional actress or is it more about less qualifications academically and more about natural acting ability and talent that you may or may not have? I have 2 NVQ's in computers - is that enough to be qualified to gain entry to an acting college? I would be very grateful indeed if you could please enlighten me on where to begin exactly. By the way, does the fact that I am 34 automatically prevent me from getting anywhere from becoming a professional actress?

(Submitted Wednesday, October 11, 2000)
My Society recently staged an amateur production of this brand new musical, written in its entirety by two of the Society's members. The response from the audience was favourable enough to suggest that we should be persuading maybe even professional theatre agents to take a look at it, with a view to further performances. Can anybody tell me how to bring the work to the attention of 'the professionals'?

Question -      Scripts
(Submitted Saturday, October 28, 2000)
Hi,We are a newly formed amdram group out in the sticks, looking for a source of scripts, preferably comedy, can you help? On behalf of Bowes Amateur Theatrical Society (B.A.T.S) Eric Liddell

Answer -      for the info of "B.A.T.S."
(Submitted Saturday, October 28, 2000)
I think your best starting point for scripts is your local library. They will have a book which will list thousands of plays. They are grouped in sections i.e. comedy, tragedy etc. It will also list number of actors required and number of males/females and a short synopsys. We have found this to be the easiest way. Also - check local radio. If they have an "arts" section they can ask for budding writers to submit plays to you. - If you are the first to perform it - then when (if) the play is published - your players will be listed ! - Hope this helps - Mark Jennings - Too Friendly Theatre Co. Merseyside.

Answer -      "Urgent Costume advice"
(Submitted Saturday, October 28, 2000)
Hope this is in time ! A high class prostitute in the 70's did not look like a prostitute!!! (Oh help I hear you say!) The main item was a fur coat ( the saying was - all coat and no knickers!) It was normally 3 quarter length and black stockings (NOT fishnet). The hair was "high class looking" These prostitutes met with rich clients - the clients liked to often show them off as girl friends - so tarty was out of the question! - My advice is : look posh and rich! Mark Jennings (Too Friendly Theatre Co.)

Answer -      How can I become a professional actress
(Submitted Saturday, October 28, 2000)
I think it would be best to join an amateur dramatics club where you can build up experience gradually in the chorus and work your way up through small parts up to the Lead. I do not think acedemic qualifications matter as long as you have talent. Many leading actors and actresses such as Brenda Blethyn , Bob Hoskins and Judy Dench started in amateur dramatics. In fact Brenda Bletyhn was older than you are know when she first joined the amateur dramatic society of the bank where she was working. If you would like to pick up some Theory training you can also do this along with the amateur dramatics. Good Luck

Answer -      How can I become a professioal actress
(Submitted Sunday, October 29, 2000)
I agree with the above answer to your question. The best place to find out if "you've got it" is in amdram. So many actors come out of acting schools like mechanical robots! The best way to act - (and this is only my personal opinion) is not to act !! Sounds daft - but look at any poorly performed play and it is normally because the players over-act - they are unnatural. Your age is a bonus! because you will have met many people and therefore have gained knowledge of charaters through the best University one can attend - Life ! Mark Jennings.

Answer -      Qualify
(Submitted Sunday, October 29, 2000)
I said above that the best way to act was not to act. I had better qualify that. What I mean is one should "become that character" by sitting and studing it. Then when you are that character - you don't have to act it do you! (get it!) Oh yes - my keyboard can't spell Professional ! Mark Jennings

Question -      What I Did For Love
(Submitted Thursday, November 09, 2000)
I think I am going to use this song to try-out for my high school musical. Can anyone suggest HOW I should sing this - any actions I should incorporate? What should I be feeling-happiness/sadness? does only one person sing the majority in the begining then w/ chorus or is it 2 females? My high school is doing How To Succeed this April and try outs are in less than 2 months(before Christmas). I am probably going to try out reading as Rosemary--she seems to fit my own personality in some ways. I have tried out my soph and junior years, but never got in--our casts are rather small--no more than 50. I don't have the strongest voice(I'm soft-spoken) or the best for reaching high notes(and my voice sometimes gets shaky when I sing and I'm nervous) so I was wondering if anyone had suggestions for what other song(s) I could try out to. It has to be from a musical and it shouldn't be longer than 2 minutes. There is a new director this year so he might make us do a song from this show, but any suggestions will help me greatly. Please hurry--I still need to learn the song if I haven't heard it yet. p.s.--I don't take music lessons either--so ANY pointers would be greatly appreciated-especially for projecting my voice and sounding strong and confident and good -I really want to get in my senior year. Thank you so very much. ~ Mare

Question -      Calling all 'lost musical' know it alls!!!
(Submitted Friday, November 17, 2000)
I am desperately searching for some information on "Bernadette - the peoples musical". I know that it ran for about three weeks at London's Dominion Theatre in the summer of 1993. Natalie Wright released a single LP - "Who are you?". Does anyone know anything else about this show. In particular where i could find a copy of the score or libretto? If so then please reply!

Answer -      What I did for Love.
(Submitted Friday, November 17, 2000)
I have a similar problem to you. I always get nervous when I have to sing for auditions and I never know what to choose. The best idea is to sing something that you are comfortable with. It may not be the most astounding show stopper ever written but that is not normally what audition panels are looking for. If you feel comfortable with the song, you will be able to put your own emotions into it. As for "What I did for Love" look at the lyrics - what do they mean to you? If you feel sad when you hear them then try and incorporate these feelings into your singing. If you get so nervous in auditions that your voice wobbles like mad, I've found that a song which has some speech segments in it works well. I always do "Nothing" also from "A Chorus Line". The initial speech -when directed at the audition panel really grabs their attention. So does a bit of comedy. Of course it depends on the type of impression you want or need to give, but essentially if you feel comfortable with your piece then your potential ability will shine through. Hope this helps. Best of luck with the audition!

Question -      PRODUCTION RIGHTS TO OLIVER THE MUSICAL
(Submitted Sunday, November 26, 2000)
Who owns the rights to the musical Oliver. Our group want to stage the show and I can't find where to buy it.

Answer -      What I Did For Love
(Submitted Sunday, November 26, 2000)
I am a director in Toronto, Canada and I have also performed twice in How to Succeed. I would suggest that you avoid "What I Did For Love" or anything from "A Chorus Line", these songs are difficult to sing well unless you are a very experienced singer. Instead, focus on your strengths ... if you consider yourself more of an actor than a singer, choose a piece that has more character singing in it, also you might be wise to choose something else written by Frank Loesser, or something in a similar style to "How to Succeed". Rosemary is an ingenue, but she is written quite campy, almost a send-up of an ingenue. Why not do something from "Guys and Dolls" (Adelaide's Lament, If I Were A Bell). Or maybe something from "The Pajama Game" (I'm not at all in Love). One more suggestion: Happily Ever After or Shy (both from "Once Upon A Mattress" and both terrific audition pieces for a comedic role. Hope this helps. Merle Garbe

Question -      Comedy duets for upcoming show
(Submitted Thursday, January 25, 2001)
Can anyone give me some ideas for a comedy duet that a man & woman can perform together? Last year we did "Short Term Affair" by Steve Coogan as Tony Ferrino & this went down very well. We are looking for something that can be visually funny as well as the lyrics (not necessarily looking for subtlety here). Thank you.

Answer -      Comedy Duets for Upcoming Show
(Submitted Friday, January 26, 2001)
What style are you looking for? Maltby & Shire have a couple of wonderful duets in "Closer Than Ever". I especially like "You Wanna Be My Friend" (mostly female singing) and "Fandango". You can also do some fun stuff with "Carried Away" (from "On the Town"). There's a hilarious parody of Steve Lawrence & Eydie Gorme called "I Hate Your Guts". Second City's SCTV did it about 10 years ago, but I'm not sure where you'd get the music. Hope this helps.

I once auditioned for the National Youth Music Theatre. I think you have to apply to the same place for both companies. As far as I can remember you have to write to NYMT , The Palace Theatre, Shaftesbury Avenue, London. If not try searching on the web. Or leave a message on the message board of www.dresscircle.co.uk and someone is bound to know. Everyone replies pretty quickly on there too. Hope this helps. ***An Aspiring Diva***

Question -      Setting up/registering a Drama Group.
(Submitted Tuesday, February 20, 2001)
The Eastbury Players - setting up/registering a Drama Group. To whom it may concern I wonder if you can help me. I'm in the process of putting an Amateur Dramatics Group together in the village of Eastbury near Lambourn in Berkshire, England. We have in actual fact already performed one play which was Neil Simon's "The Plaza Suite." The production was very well supported by the villagers and this has prompted us to put a Group together. I'm very conscious that we need to do this properly as I realise we will need to pay Copyright fees for future Productions and there maybe certain bodies or drama society's that we need to register with. With this in mind would you know how we have to go about this or alternatively, who I could contact to give me more information. Any assistance or advice you could give would be much appreciated. Also a number of us will be meeting shortly to determine what our next play should be. Apart from Libraries do you know the best place to look for Play Scripts? Again any assitance would be much appreciated. Thank you for your time. I look forward to your reply. Kind Regards Chris Capel chris.capel@pcubed.com

Answer -      What Do People Want To See & What's Fun to Perform
(Submitted Wednesday, February 21, 2001)
We are in Toronto (Canada)and have similar challenges to yours. We did the musical "Anne of Green Gables", written by Norman Campbell and Don Harron, and it was a big success. Very few adult male roles, although you need a few young men. Most of the chorus singing is done by women and teens. Samuel French holds the rights. It's a lovely script, catchy music, and has lots of stuff for the chorus. If you have specific questions about it, you can e-mail me at info@EncoreShows.com.

I wish to become singer, but have to make a decision at this point. I can either go to a stage school to help gain confidence and experience on stage, or i have been offered a place at university.i know singing is not directly related to dramatics, but is there any organisation that could help me decide what course to take? Is there a dramatics club or singing group in exeter that i could join to help me gain experience in front of audiences. or by going there, will it put me at a disadvantage as i will not be able to attend auditions that a mostly held in London? Question -      Fluorescent makeup?
(Submitted Saturday, March 31, 2001)
Some years ago when I was in heavy duty amdrams, an expert advised that the best glow was given by Zambuk zinc ointment over makeup. Is this still around? I will seek this out, but is there another easy substance to give a blue glow under ultraviolet light? This will be for J W Wells incantation scene in Sorcerer. The flash powder we used in 1982 was not very reliable!! Also I intend to use dry ice dropped into warm water in teapot. Any suggestions for a drastic effect. The flash powder we used in 1982 was not very reliable! Also for final disapperance of JWW, last time I used large glass chandelier drop with several flash bulbs wired behind it, and departed while audience blinked. We only have a small stage area, not really room for large plate glass illusions!

Question -      Blacking up in Shows
(Submitted Thursday, April 19, 2001)
Dear members concerning blacking up in Shows, I would like to hear your views. I have been blacking up as Al Jolson in Concerts, Revues and Musicals for 12 years and sung over 1,000 songs. I also run a Theatre Company and have recently come up against critical complaints from three members concerning my blacking up. As far as i am concerned the blacking up (also like the Black and white minstrels) is an act of portrayal a character/s and is not at all racist. Al Jolson did it as a tribute to the black music of the time. It is not the black people that object, but bigoted white people, who have nothing better to do. My recent concerns come when we are to stage a song called 'In Dahomey' from "Showboat" and with me opening our annual garden party in July as Al Jolson. Revivals of the Minstrels was accepted in the mid 1990's and Brian Conley as Al in the three hit Musical "Jolson". If ever there was a ban on blacking up, it must be made clear that NO CHARACTER WHAT SO EVER, should be portrayed in a Musical, there should not be just one colour banned. This would not only stop "Showboat" but other Musicals such as "Anything goes" (Chinamen), "Annie get your gun" (Red Indians)"Robinson Crusoe" (Man Friday)and many other Musicals that include colours from different countries. This world of policically correct is getting out of hand and never should such a ban ever be made law. I will continue to portray Al Jolson as i always have, until i die or able. Only one Theatre in Plymouth has a ban (Barbican Theatre) and all others including the Theatre Royal, could not care less. Please resolve my plea as i would like to inform my biogoted members. Many thanks, yours sincerely, David. D J Bailey E-Mail: david_bailey@btinternet.com

Answer -      Anyone Looking for Amdram societies in their area.
(Submitted Monday, April 23, 2001)
Hi all, There appear to be many messages on here from people wanting to join amdram groups but finding it difficult to get into any. My advice is that you go to your local public library (if there is a central branch rather than a neighbourhood one you have more chance). Ask them for a list of societies in your area. They normally have something though it is often left behind the desk. Failing this look out for posters or leaflets advertising local theatre groups. They normally have the address of their ticket secretary on them. If you contact them they can put you in touch with the society secretary/president who an then tell you a bit about the society. You can find leaflets in libraries, theatres. Thirdly, try writing to the actual theatre - their marketing officer is probably the best contact. Ask them for contact addresses for any societies that may perform at their theatre. It is best to contact the smaller theatres in the area as they are more likely to have amdram shows. Finally, (perhaps this should have been first) look out for amdram shows happening in your area and go to them. This gives you the opportunity to see what they are like in performance and to meet a few of their members. There are always a few members front of house that you can get some details from, sometimes the programmes advertise for new members, and then you can always stay in the bar and look for cast members afterwards!!! Hope this helps anyone that was looking. Final word: Keep trying until you find a group. Amateur dramatics needs people to keep it going. It is one of the best ways of gaining experience, confidence and friends. Maybe we'll see you in the limelight soon. Be sure to post what you are performing in on this site!!!

How can I find out on a regular and reliable basis who is doing versions of "The Mikado" in the UK?

Answer -      Mikado

To rehearse / perform Mikado you must have a license. Try Samual French. If they don't hold the rights they should be able to tell you who does hold them (mind you, they didn't know about "Her Benny") - anyway, the company that issues the license will be able to tell you if an application has been made for a license and over which dates as well as the venue. - Mark, "Too Friendly Theatre Company". Question -      URGENT: looking for old actor for professional pro
(Submitted Saturday, May 26, 2001)
dialogueprods@compuserve.com URGENT: looking for old actor for professional production of "Merlin" in at Riverside Studios Hammer Dear Amateurdramatic-team, Our theatre company dialogue productions is staging the English premiere of the international hitplay "Merlin" by multi-award winning German playwright Tankred Dorst. For a key scene in this high profile production,we are looking for an old actor for a short but hugely significant cameo appearance. As this extra actor is not in the budget, we are hoping to find an old amateur actor in London who would be interested. The scene we need this actor for: The Round Table is well established, all the battles have been fought, the great heroes are quite pleased with themselves. The younger generation, however, are not too impressed with their achievement and start to mock them, saying they don't want to grow old and boring. Merlin, who joins the scene, offers them to actually see their old age here and now. One of the young knights, Sir Beauface, accepts the challenge. He puts his face in a bowl of water Merlin has tampered with, and after some seconds during which all the knights stand around him, counting, cheering, he lifts his face from the bowl as an old man. Stunned silence. The old Sir Beauface hs lived his whole life within a few seconds and now tells the knights about it. Then he collapses in his chair, dead. To make this wonderful magic scene work, we really do need an old actor who can slip in among the cheering knights and take the young knight's place, so if there is any way you can help us find this actor, PLEASE let us know as soon as possible. We are rehearsing for 5 weeks from 4th June, but would only need the acotr to come in a few times during that period. The run is from 12 July to 4th August, with 2 matinees (17th/20th July,

I saw Bernadette. It lasted three hot weeks (30 perfs)in June 1990, despite a papel blessing. The story was ludicrous with the hero dying impailed on a rococo coat hook. The crowd loved the berzerk leaky robotic doughnut set. Camper than a row of tents, there were barely 50 people a night in the audience. The soundtrack is treasured by those who have it - priceless lyrics include "it was an illusion / that caused your mental confusion" and "Am I just a simple child imagining" Further details from contacting through theatremonkey.com

Answer -      Production Advice Needed
(Submitted Wednesday, June 27, 2001)
Obvious gender biased musicals are Follies (Sondheim) and Company - adjust the centre role of Bobby for a woman and you get a very interesting contrast. Less obvious are 'Stepping Out The Musical' and 'The Goodbye Girl the Musical'. Also 'A Tree Grows In Brooklyn', Side By Side By Sondheim, Tomfoolery. In general, think in terms of adapting scores to roles - it will open up your choices.

(Submitted Monday, October 07, 2002)
Hello All: I am a 38 years old fine artist living and working in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. On the effort to improve my skills and art view I am planning a trip back to the United Kingdom this comig late October 2002 but, this time, to visit and learn more about theatre stage painting. I have a Invitation from the Royal National Theatre to be a observer at the Scenery Studio and a proposal for a Internship Programme at the Shakespeare Globe Theatre. This will reassure my pursuit to have a successful apprenticeship and an enrichment for my career as a designer, artist and a theatre professional. As both experiences will be unpaid, I am considering taking paid jobs placements at alternative work fronts and time schedules. It is of vital importance for my stay in London. This will reassure my journey to be a successful enrichment for my career as a theatre professional. I welcome your views and any suggestions on this matter would be of great value to me. My work is available for your view on my homepage: www.artdeluxe.hpg.com.br, there are photographs of the main works I accomplished on this country. I would greatly appreaciate your time and attention to this matter. Thank you very much James Alves Martins email: artdeluxe@radnet.com.br

Question -      Orchestra
(Submitted Tuesday, April 29, 2003)
Our society is toying with the idea of placing the orchestra in a seperate room of the theatre ( a dance rehearsal room with wooden floor) and pipng the sound through our PA system along with the mic`d performers. The theatre seats only 300. The plan put forward is to have cameras on the MD with the image available to those on stage, and the image of the stage available to the MD in return. Anyone tried this before? How does the lack of direct eye contact affect the relationship?

Answer -      Orchestra
(Submitted Thursday, May 29, 2003)
I have just completed a run in West Side Story where the Orchestra was behind the set. The cast could see the MD on a number of monitors in the auditorium, the MD had 2 monitors showing a whole stage view and a close up of the centre section. It helped balance the sound but left the cast feeling a little vunerable at times, some of the pick-ups are quite hard and the lack of eye-contact did have an effect on timing. Once we had got used to it the system worked quite well. The cast need to rehearse any pick-ups/entrances nuch more if they know that they won't see the MD. It helps if you do the same at rehearsals - ie have the MD somewhere out of sight of the cast.

Question -      Song
(Submitted Monday, August 30, 2004)
I am eager to find somsinger who can sing my following poem, THOSE EYES:- And it started with communication through eyes, followed... then a sweet smile......, as if a thunder had struck my heart, the throb went faster.. no wonder, as some moments passed by, the urge to meet intensified. First words were difficult to find...? then we spoke......,and the inhibitions broke, and I sank,... in the depth of her eyes. The contact, the touch, the warmth...., sprinkled jubilation and joy......., thoes few moments of togetherness .........., is a treat.... forever to rejoice, comes out from my heart... a voice, I was in .....love, yes I was in love. somehow I lost a treasure...,I dont know why? Oh! this feeling........simply makes me cry. Those beautiful eyes............ to see again, to feel that excitement.. and fulfilment again, I could simply die.

Answer -      How can I become a professional actress
(Submitted Friday, September 10, 2004)
I have just come across this section of the site and I know that it is unlikely that the 34 year old who asked the below (Question - How can I become a professional actress) two years ago may never read this reply but I would like to take this opportunity to give a reply. Perhaps somebody in the same position as she was may gain valuable information from my reply. Firstly age is no barrier to becoming an actress - a successful professional or somebody who thoroughly enjoys the challanges that can be encoutered at an amateurdramatics society. Ask yourself this question: Why do you want to become an actress. If your reply has anything to do with the financial benefits then please stay in your current employment. If your reply has anything to do with either passion, love or talent then please read on. Passion equalls blood sweat and tears, that is rehersals and experimenting with different sides of your personality through the use of playing different characters. Love is simply the love of theatre or film. Talent is your qualification in this business. If you have a full time job please do not leave it and jump into drama training. My advice is to firstly join an amateurdramtics society or drama club. You will then see if you have any of the above qualities that I have explained. If you then feel this is your path in life then and only then join an acredited drama school or college in London I have seen students who have had various careers before training to become actors, many have been in their 50's. It is important that at this stage you can gain a qualification in drama this will show directors of your comitment to your craft. Finally the secret to success is this - you must be seen! It is no good if you have the look that a director wants and he will never see you. So you must get yourself seen by professionals this will then enable you to go for auditions for professional work. Or even be discoverd as they say. To achieve this and be seen by the REAL professionals in the industry I would advise you to have your photograph displayed in the Database of Actors at ACTING-UP. This is a website that has been designed by professional directors in theatre and film in the USA, Canada and the United Kingdom. They also display quality jobs free of charge to all actors who have the photographs displayed on the Database of Actors. The good thing for you is that they except entries from student actors as well as professionals. The website for the Databse of Actors is at ACTING-UP just visit www.acting-up.net

(Submitted Thursday, November 04, 2004)
I need an actress that I will fly to Ottawa and arrange car rental and hotel for 1 week. While she is there I need her to get a specific 44 year-old man interested in her. NO nudity or lewd behavior. I just need him to go out with her on datees a few times. Then I have something specific that needs to be said word for word so that he will want to return to me. Anyone interested? It pays $1500 plus expenses. Any ideas where to hire a legitimate person to do this? I am a business owner and good citizen.

Answer -      Clarion Drama Movement
(Submitted Monday, November 29, 2004)
Am interested in history, so did a quick google search, rather too many results to wade through, but one which caught my eye was that the University of Glasgow has material relating to Glasgow Unity Theatre, who were formed from the Clarion Players, see http://www.backstage.ac.uk/cld2/show_full?my_id=1017327108 for more details. I suggest you also post your enquiry on the amdram discussion forum at www.amdram.co.uk/forums/

Question -      Sound effects equipment needed
(Submitted Wednesday, December 07, 2005)
I need some old-fashioned manually operated sound effects equipment for a play. Now that most effects are created digitally, I'm finding it difficult to get hold of things like a wind machine, thunder sheet, crash box etc etc which are needed for their visual aspects more than the actual sound effects themselves. I have found some instructions on the Internet on how to construct the above, but before starting down that route, I wondered did anyone have such things cluttering up their attic that they wanted to get rid of? If not, does anyone know where I could get hire them(desperate last resort, of course!). Any information would be appreciated. Many thanks Nigel (nigel.holloway@off-the-wall-plays.co.uk)
